According to an article by National Geographic, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that hotels and other lodgings use about 15 percent of the total water taken up by commercial and institutional facilities in the United States.

Here are some quick surprising facts you might not have known

  • You thought swimming pools use up a ton of water? Think again; they account for LESS than 1 percent of hotel water consumption.
  • Toilets account for 30 percent of water consumption.
  • Laundry operations are next, at 16 percent.

"Is the hotel just asking me to save my towel to save a couple of bucks?"

I'm sure that question has crossed your mind

But it's true; it really does make a difference.

The American Hotel and Lodging Association estimates that the requests on those little cards in the hotel room actually reduces the number of loads of laundry washed—and all the related water, sewer, energy, and labor costs—by 17 percent.
