Global Fest starts tomorrow in Calgary! If you are heading to the festival, which takes place August 18th through the 27th at Elliston Park, let’s take a look back at how the festival got started and what you can expect this year.
According to the Global Fest website, the groundwork began in 1993 with the formation of the The Calgary Fireworks Festival Society. The nonprofit Society searched for a suitable fireworks launch site in Calgary for 8 years. Finally, in 2001, the Society discovered Elliston Park in Calgary’s Greater Forest Lawn district. The Society’s dream could finally become a reality.
The Festival burst onto the scene in 2003 with 10 cultural pavilions and 3 countries presenting pyromusicals. Calgary’s very own international fireworks festival reached over 100,000 in attendance – one of the top draws for local citizens and tourists alike!
GlobalFest’s mission is to “produce an inclusive, world class arts and culture festival that celebrates diversity and artistic excellence within the communities across the globe.” Over the past 15 years, the festival has solidified Alberta’s reputation as a truly international destination.
